|
| General Description |
The Cat Tien Biosphere Reserve is located in the south of Viet Nam within the Indo-West-Pacific biogeographic region. It extends from the Annamite Range moist forest in the north to the forests of the Mekong Delta Complex in the south. The majority of the area is covered mostly by a secondary evergreen forest, but also some primary evergreen forests, semi-evergreen forests, mixed forests, bamboo forests and wetlands are characteristic of the region. Cat Tien Biosphere Reserve, covering 257, 357 hectares in total, includes the Cat Tien National Park situated in the core area. The 9, 570 inhabitants of the biosphere reserve can be divided into 11 ethnic groups who all live in the core area (2001). They are either lowland Viatnamese (Kinh), indigenous minorities (S’Tieng and Chau Ma) or recently migrated minorities from the north of Vietnam (e.g. Tay and Nung) and have their own land use strategies. For example, the indigenous people do shifting cultivation and migrants mostly make their living from fishing and hunting. A conservation project is currently underway with the aims of conserving the remaining tropical forest at Cat Tien and its biodiversity; maintaining a viable population of Javan rhinoceros (Rhinoceros sondaicus annamiticus) within the Cat Tien National Park; protecting a critical part of the water catchment of the Tri An reservoir; enhancing public awareness of the physical and biological values of the national park and its surroundings and improving income-generating opportunities for the local population. |
