Landscapes and ethnic groups of the northern mountainous region are featured in a photograph exhibition which opened on Apr. 24 in Hanoi.

Entitled Sac Mau Vung Cao (The Colour of Mountainous Region), the exhibition is being organised by the Vietnam News Agency to celebrate the liberation of south Vietnam on April 30, 1975.

The 70 large photographs exhibited are the result of several journeys by 16 VNA photojournalists to remote mountainous areas.

They depict the daily lives, festivals, customs and traditional attire of the ethnic groups, including Mong, Dao, Thai, Nung, La Hu and Lo Lo.

Photographer Thanh Ha, who has 10 photos on display, said the culture and the people of the region gave him endless inspiration.

His photo La Pan Tan Vao Mua (La Pan Tan in Harvesting Season), showed picturesque terraced paddy fields – a symbolic image of the region.

Le Hoi Nhay Lua Cua Nguoi Pa Then (The Fire Jumping Festival of Pa Then People), by Minh Dao portrays the spiritual atmosphere of the area, showing a barefoot man jumping along hot coals; his expression is not pain, but a sense of spiritual awakening.

Several other tourist spots, including the Silver Waterfall in Sa Pa, Lao Cai province, Nui Doi ( Breast Mountain ), Vuong Mansion, and Lung Cu Flag Tower in the northern most Ha Giang province, were also featured in the photos.

The exhibition will remain open at 45 Trang Tien Street, Hanoi, until May 1.
